Freak Of The Week….

Freak Of The Week — Gary on March 16, 2007 at 8:31 pm

I don’t have a picture but everyone who went to the Unleash Conference yesterday is this weeks Freak Of The Week!!!  You guys are awesome!!!  You took off work, left the church at 5:30 in the morning and headed a church conference just because we asked you to do it!

The e-mails I have gotten from you guys today have literally rocked my world.  RSC will never be the same again because you 40 people have had your vision expanded and now have seen what is possible.

Thank you and I can’t wait to see what God does through all of you!

Bracket is ruined

Sports — Gary on March 16, 2007 at 7:50 pm

Already my bracket is crap.  I hate college basketball but I get suckered in every year to filling out a bracket.  I’m a sucker big time.

Date Night - new plans!!!

Family — Gary on March 16, 2007 at 9:18 am

DeAnna and I, along with Tim and Courtney had tickets tonight to Nickelback tonight at the Gwinnett Arena.  I am a big Nickelback fan so to say I was pumped up would have been an understatement.  DeAnna has really gotten to where she loves concerts and it is one of my favorite things to do with her.

Well that is now changed.  I just found out the concert is cancelled!!!  The dude is having voice problems so it has been rescheduled for next Thursday!!!

So the kids are already at my moms and now DeAnna get to make new plans for tonight.  I can’t wait….. :)

We’ll never be the same…

General, Ridge Stone Church — Gary on March 15, 2007 at 9:24 pm

I left the house at 4 this morning and just got him from the Unleash Conference. I am not even opening my email up so I will keep this short and sweet.

The conference was great. Perry simply hit it out of the park with his two sessions and the breakouts were good to hear the questions others were asking and remind myself how far we have come.

HANDS down the best experience was being with 41 of our people and letting them see what God can and WILL do through Ridge Stone Church. Our people left jacked up and it was worth EVERY penny we spent to take them there and let them see the future for us. I kid you not, half our team left there ready to quit their jobs and come work at the church full time for free. :)

I honestly with every thing in my soul feel our church will never be the same again. People got to see what we have been talking about and they will never be the same.

Good night.

Wonder what would happen?

General — Gary on March 14, 2007 at 10:25 am

Purchasing alcohol on Sundays is back in the news big time today.  It is in the newspaper, it is the talk of the radio stations and there was somone talking about it in the office today.

I am sure the denominational stuff will start arriving in my email box and mail box VERY soon telling me it is our responsibility as local churches to stop this and that we should unite to fight it, and blah blah blah.

Dying churches and dying denominations will finally have their much needed cause to fight.

Heaven forbid we rally around the fact that people in our communities are dying and going to hell!!!  Instead we spend time fighting adult bookstores and drinking on Sunday.

I wonder what would happen if we got as passionate about reaching our communities with the life changing message of Jesus Christ instead of fighting stupid stuff?  I imagine we wouldn’t have to worry about fighting stupid stuff because it wouldn’t be happening.

Just my thoughts. :)

You DON’T want everyone….

Church Planting, General — Gary on March 13, 2007 at 7:53 pm

I think one of the greatest lessons I learned while planting a church in Iowa was that you do NOT want everyone who comes through the doors. That might not be popular for a pastor to say but it is a valuable lesson.

When I planted our church in Iowa I wanted everyone who came through the doors to stay. As a result I tried to make our church a church that offered whatever you wanted. If you were a homeschooler, we had stuff for you. If you wanted Sunday school, we had that for you. If you wanted something we didn’t have, I was willing to start what you wanted to keep you. I ended up miserable and the church never grew beyond 150 people because we didn’t have laser focus.

BEFORE starting The Stone I determined through many hours of prayer and studying other churches the type of church Ridge Stone would be. Not that we are the only way to do church but I decided before we ever added ONE family what our vision would be and I decided before starting that I would close her down if we lost focus of that vision.

That has proven very valuable since starting. There have been many times I have been faced with changing the vision in order to keep people and to be honest I never even had to pray about it because before we started I knew we weren’t the church for everyone.

I honestly think this is one of the BIGGEST differences between a church that grows and one that doesn’t.

If you try and keep everyone you will stop your church from growing and lead yourself to an early grave.

Case in point: We recently had a family visit our church. I am convinced 99% of the church planters I know would have killed each other to have this family. They were very nice people, came from a large mega-church, brought a lot of ministry skill (just ask them :) ), gave financially, and had all their teeth. :)

We met with them as a staff and I knew literally within 2 minutes that we were the wrong church for them. They shared how long they had lived in the area and the number of churches they had “tried out,” they shared how they thought we should be doing church, they begin to ask more questions about policies then the vision, and then they informed me that in order to grow our vision would have to change from reaching unchurched people. I checked out about 5 minutes into the meeting but I kept quiet to see how our staff would respond. Needless to say our team got that while on paper this couple looked good, they were NOT a fit for us.

I loved that while our entire staff is consumed with reaching our community and growing that they all understood that as much as we want people, we didn’t want this family.

I honestly feel that their understanding of that is one of the reasons we have grown. Jim Collins talks in Good to Great about getting the right people on the bus. In growing a church this is also a huge key. You have to get the right people on the bus because if you fill the bus with the wrong people no matter how good they are, no matter their experience, no matter how much they give, you will never build a church.

Don’t be afraid to let people go.  Every healthy body needs a good bowel movement on a regular basis. :)

I have learned who you let go is just as important as who you reach.

Some guys who might be off your radar….

Blogging — Gary on March 13, 2007 at 6:59 pm

There are some blogs out there probably don’t get the props that others get but I dig them and what they are doing so I thought I would share those with you here for no other reason then I want to and it is my blog. :)

Robery Pooley - Love this dude. I found out he is going to be at the conference this week. Just an old rocker and I dig that.

Roger Blackmore - OLD codger who is planting churches in Long Island.  They meet in a movie theater and are talking about going mulit-site.  When most cats are retiring, he is planting. :)

Jimmy Britt - Hands down one of my favorite people in the world. I freaking love the dude. One of the few pastors I have met that I would hire because he would TOTALLY fit in with our team.

Greg Rohlinger - How Greg remains a secret is beyond me. I think some of it has to do with the fact you can’t subscribe to his blog and people simply forget about it. One of my best friends and I love the dude.

Chris Elrod - The dude simply makes me laugh like no one else and the dude LOVES rock and roll music. His post on reaching men is spot on.

Dave Anderson - I love this guys zeal. He is keeping on keeping on in Alabama and SO desires to see God do something great that it causes me to pray for him on a regular basis. I can honestly say I have never seen anyone who wants IT more then him.

Scott Whitaker - His blog actually sucks because he never posts but when he does it is good. Love the dude and God has united us in so many ways. Another one that I would bring on our team in a freaking heartbeat.

Charlie Pharris - LOVE the dude. Not only do I think Charlie would fit in with our team I believe he WILL be a part of our team one day. There will be a time when we go multi-site and I will go hard after Charlie to join our team. He is old as dirt but as cool as the other side of the pillow.

Malcolm Young - One of my best friends in the world and also on staff as our Connections Pastor. Malcolm started blogging a few months ago and is a natural. His blog is devoted more towards his team at the church but their is some good wisdom there.

Those are just a few of the blogs I read that might not be on your radar. Check them out, you’ll be glad you did.

Yes, we will hunt you down :)

Ridge Stone Church — Gary on March 13, 2007 at 6:03 pm

I shared with you on Monday how we had a bunch of NICE luggage stolen from the theater.  Well, my crazy creative team has been determined to find it and today they got a lead at a pawn shop.  They guy told him that a kid had been in last Monday with luggage that looked what we described AND that he had a friend that tried to steal something so they called the cops on him.  The kid with the luggage took off but I will be calling some of our police officers tomorrow and getting them to follow up with the kid they arrested and get a name. :)

I figure the kid works at the theater so he sholdn’t be hard to find.  I pity the kid and pray that the police get to him before our creative team. :)

Hell hath no fury like a bunch of crazy creative women!!!!

Church Planters Roundtable

Church Planting — Gary on March 13, 2007 at 5:50 pm

I told you last week we are hosting a very informal Church Planter’s Roundtable and we would LOVE have you join us to hang out, hear our story, learn from us, allow us to hear your story, and learn from you.

What I didn’t mention is due to space and parking in our office complex we are having to keep it to 25 planting teams. We have a few spots left but if you want to come, you better e-mail Taylor at taylor@ridgestonechurch.com or at the contact tab at the top of the page asap. You can bring your entire team but we have to limit it to 25 teams due to parking.

We have guys so far coming from South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, and Washington D.C.

It is going to be a fun time of learning from each other.

To know exactly what I am talking about click here.

Unleash This Week!!

Ridge Stone Church — Gary on March 12, 2007 at 9:19 pm

Crap, I just looked at my calendar and realized the Unleash Conference is this week.  We have 41 people going and I am looking forward to hanging out with our awesome people and for them to see what could be at The Stone.

We are heading out at 5:30 in the morning, but it is going to be worth it.

I have several friends that are going to be there so it will be good to see some old faces but mostly I am pumped up for people.  I honestly think these 41 people are going to come back with a vision for this area that they never thought possible.  It is going to be freaking awesome!
