Rested Up

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Yesterday after church I was done.  I hit the wall in a big time way.  I honestly never feeling so tired and so out of it.  I know this sounds wimpy and people who don’t teach on a weekly basis won’t understand, but after teaching 5 straight months, I was spent.

I went to bed VERY early last night and slept until I woke up.  I got to the office a little later this morning and it is amazing how much better I feel.  It was just a great reminder of the importance of taking care of our bodies and getting the proper rest.

Today we had a good Lead Team meeting dreaming about some future stuff and talking about how Revolution can continue to grow.  I love dreaming with our guys.  God is doing some big things at Revolution and I want us to be prepared for them.

I’m chilling a little this week with no meetings and next week I am heading to Elevation and New Spring so that is always a recipe for me getting fired up!

Sunday Night Mind Dump

Sunday, March 30th, 2008
  • GREAT day today!!!!
  • Loving the vibe in the church right now!
  • Loving the Rock Star series!!!!!!
  • The Band was as good as I have ever heard them today!
  • It was cool seeing Harvey back on guitar today! I miss that dude.
  • It was nice not having spring break the week after Easter. That is a first for us!
  • We are going to add a third service this fall if we can hold out. We will have to do it in another theater and stagger start times. Probably 9:00, 9:45 (in another theater), and 10:30. The band will leave the stage, go to the next theater and start the next service while I am preaching in the first, and on and on. Sound crazy? I am sure it is but I refuse to allow space to stop us from growing. When a service is 75% full it stops growing and we have been that way in our second service for a while.
  • We MIGHT even change the worship style for the middle service. Still praying through that one. If we changed it, it would probably be an unplugged worship set and the first and last service would stay like they are now.
  • TONS of new people around Revolution!
  • Today was as close as I have ever come to not preaching right before the service. I didn’t think I was going to make it, but God brought me through.
  • I took a 4 hour nap when I got home.
  • I am in the cycling mode right now!
  • The band was insane today!
  • Thad had the student service rocking tonight. GREAT start!
  • I’m in sushi mode right now!
  • Can’t believe we are tackling Revelation next week. Jesus is coming back and we’re going to show what He is going to do when he gets back! Should be fun!
  • Multi-site Exposed Conference in Seattle is in two weeks!!! Looking forward to heading up there with our Lead Team.
  • Rumor has it our Lead Team is getting matching Tattoos. Everyone seems game but Thad who is scared of what Jill will do to him. What a wuss. :)
  • I think I am going to go check out West Ridge Church when I have a Sunday off. Haven’t been to a Sunday service since they moved into their new building.
  • I am LOVING watching the leader that Adam is becoming. I love the dude, trust the dude, and seeing him take his leadership to the next level is cool.
  • I know Ben’s new job. No, I am not telling.
  • We have a TON of school teachers at Revolution and I know they are ready for this week to be over and for spring break to start! They need the break and they deserve the break!
  • God is doing some cool things at Revolution in us reaching different races. The fact is that Canton is 95% anglo, but that is quickly changing and I am glad that Revolution is reflecting that change.
  • I actually had an area pastor “warn” me when we started the church about being careful about allowing “to many black people” in our church because he said Canton people wouldn’t like that. What an idiot. I guess those people won’t like Heaven either.
  • Thought of the week: “Those who can, do. Those who can’t, tell others how to do it”
  • A pastor I use to talk to quite often and really respected left his church three weeks ago with another women in the church. This week I found out he has started a consulting and coaching business for churches. Are you FREAKING kidding me??? Who would hire this guy? If you do, you should be shot.
  • This guy must not have crazy friends like I do because if I left my wife for another woman, I have some people who would be kicking my tail. Seriously, I have some pastor friends who would literally beat the crap out of me.
  • Membership Class is coming up!! If you are new to Revolution, this is the class for you. Contact Preston and sign up!
  • Heard we were a cult today. Interesting. If that is the case, I need a raise. I thought cult leaders made a lot of money.
  • I’m fried. Seriously, I am as tired as I have ever been. I am taking a couple of days off this week.
  • We have had weirdos in the service three weeks in a row. Thank God for our security team. People are just loony.
  • I’m loving this series, but I am getting VERY excited about our Prison Break series that starts at the end of the month!
  • I’m going to bed.

Not Good….

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

Thursday night Avery woke us up saying he wasn’t feeling good. Within minutes, he was puking his guts out in the bathroom for the rest of the night. Yesterday by lunch he was great.

Last night Ashlyn woke us up saying she wasn’t feeling good. Within minutes, she was puking her guts out in the bathroom the rest of the night. She is starting to feel a little better.

Now DeAnna and I are not feeling great. I am convincing myself that it is mental and that we are not getting this overnight bug. I’ve picked up the bat-phone and called Preston to let him know he needed to be ready to teach tomorrow just in case. Right now, I am going to take a nap and I’m not eating anything today. As mean as this sounds, I am also staying away from my kids. :)

I’m curious what you other pastors do as a back-up plan in case you were to get sick on a Saturday evening. Do you have something prepared? Do you have a staff person ready to roll?

I think I am going to have Preston develop a sermon he can teach in a moments notice and I think I am going to record a sermon on video we could use if there was a need. To be honest, I’ve never thought of what I would do, but I probably should.

Anyway, see ya all tomorrow!

Perfect Night

Friday, March 28th, 2008

Yesterday I posted about the perfect day.  Well, tonight is the perfect night.  The kids are asleep, the windows are open, the drinks are cold, Jack Johnson is playing and I am just hanging out with my bride eating some sushi.

Perfect.

Feel Like Writing

Friday, March 28th, 2008

I am in a creative mood right now in regards to writing, so I am going to tackle a couple of things in the next few weeks that should be good, helpful, or worthless depending where you are in life.

Some of the things I am going to talk about:

  • Church Consultants - I get asked questions about this a lot.  We have used several consultants since we started and I think we have learned what to look for when looking for a consultant.
  • Worship Prostitutes  - I’ve been brewing on this one for a while.  This has NOTHING to do with paying muscians or not.  It has everything to do with THE musicians we are paying.  I am convinced most of of them are simply prostitutes who go wherever the money is.  They don’t belong to a local church, serve in a local church or give to a local church yet we bring these guys in to lead our people in worship.  I’m looking forward to this one.
  • How we handle criticism - I actually have this one written and was going to post it this week, but we have been criticized this week pretty good and I didn’t want people to think I was posting it due to that.  I get asked about this one a lot from other planters.
  • Random Thoughts On Starting A Church - Just some quick points I have been thinking about.
  • What I Look For In Staff - Another question I got asked a lot about.  Trust me, I am NOT an expert in this but I have a great team and I think that is because we have learned a lot about putting the right people on the bus.

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday!!!!

uprisingblog1

Yep, it is almost Sunday again!!!!  It comes every 7 days and this week is going to be off the hook!!  We are continuing our Rock Star series this week as we look at the life of Jesus Christ.  This week we are going to be looking at the subject “All Access.”  It is going to be a great service as we look at one of the most gifts God has given us.  You don’t want to be late this week!  The band is kicking off the service in a very ROCKING way and it should be fun.

Also this Sunday night we are kicking off our NEW monthly student worship service.  Thad and the crew have been preparing for Sunday and I am pumped to see what God does through this new worship service.  The fun starts at 6:30 THIS Sunday night at the warehouse.  To keep up with what is happening with our students click on uprisingstudents.tv.

Revolution, let me remind you to come on Sunday expecting God to show up!  EVERY week is Easter Sunday at Revolution.  We will have a lot of first time guests this week and the place will fill up quickly.  Make sure you are there early to be a smiling face.  Also, don’t forget we need a lot of you to check out our 9:00 service.

See ya Sunday!

Perfect

You ever have one of those days where everything is just awesome?  Today was one of those days.  I got up this morning and started the day with my friend Steven Gibbs.  Steven pastors a great church in Alpharetta Milton, Ga.  I love hanging out with him.

I got the office and hung out with Chris Hotz for a few minutes.  The Hotz family have been at Revolution since basically the start and they rock!  They are nuts when it comes to financial junk.  They just became debt free and they are insane about helping others in this area.  Chris is going to start doing some financial counseling for us so stayed tuned for that.  Trust me, it will be awesome.

I spent the rest of the morning just hanging out with our tean.  We went and ate some lunch and everyone headed home.  Once I got home, I got to do something I never get to do and that was take a nap!!!!!!!  That would have made the day perfect by itself.  After getting up, Tim, Shane and I headed out to the Budweiser Plant and got drunk. Just kidding, I just wanted to make sure you were still reading. :)  We headed up to the Bud Plant and went bike riding.  We rode for a little over an hour and did a new route.  I am learning the art of drafting and it makes things much easier.  I did come as close as ever to puking my guts out today while riding.  We hit a hill and I litearlly thought I was going to lose it.  We finished and I felt great.  We are heading out again in the morning.

Now I am just sitting here with the windows open listening to music and reflecting on how awesome God has been to me.  I meet with a lot of people who are miserable with their lives and I hate that.  My life is far from perfect, but I love my wife more today than ever, I love the city I live in and serve in, and I pastor the craziest bunch of Jesus Freaks I have ever been around.  On top of all that Jesus Christ has changed my life!  I don’t deserve any of it, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t love it!

I love days like today!

Quick Hits From My Life

  • I am loving life!!!!!!!!!!

Easter Sunday Pictures

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Here are some pictures of our stage design from Sunday. It is hard to get the total look because a lot of it was done with the 8 intelligent lights we bought. We also built a catwalk that went out over the crowd, which was very cool.

Easter Egg Drop…The Rest Of The Story

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

You can read part 1 here.

As I said in the earlier post, at 10:45 we opened the bridge that led to the field where we were doing the drop. At this point people were getting restless but still being very cool. There was a buzz in the air. People were having a good time, but the park was filling up to the point you literally couldn’t move. There were so many people there we actually couldn’t move the tables to allow people to cross the bridge.

Once we got the bridge open, people started crossing the field. It took 30 minutes to get people onto the field there were so many people and only one small bridge to get onto the field. At this time I am still feeling good. We start getting the helicopter in place and one of the police officers tells me we should hold on because there are still thousands of people on the road. I knew this was not an option so I told him we were doing it because we couldn’t hold the people we had now, much less the ones coming.

I tried to get on our sound system to address the crowd and that was totally worthless. So I took a megaphone and started my way around the entire field giving the same speech probably 12 times. The eggs would drop, I would sound the alarm, KIDS only would run onto the field, once the eggs were gone, kids would sit on the ground and we would allow the parents on the field to get the kids. Everything was fine.

As the helicopter flew over everyone started chanting “Drop the eggs.” I was pumped. I got up on a motorized cart we had there to get a good view. Tim started dropping eggs and people were going nuts. It was awesome.

As soon as the eggs dropped, I sounded the alarm and it happened. At once, the entire crowd rushed the field. I remember looking up and the first thing going through my head was, “That kid just got knocked down.” When I say everyone rushed the field, I mean everyone. People were getting knocked down, trampled, our volunteers were literally run over. I remember thinking something is not right and then it dawned on me that parents were rushing the field, knocking kids down, grabbing eggs, taking eggs from other kids, and acting about as redneck as is possible. At this time I am thinking that it was a pretty good mess, but everything seemed over. I was wrong.

As I am scanning the field, kids are crying like crazy. HUNDREDS of kids didn’t get any eggs, HUNDREDS of kids are covered in mud, and then I hear the parents start screaming out names. HUNDREDS of kids were separated from their parents! You couldn’t find anyone. Parents were screaming, crying, cussing people out (funny thing was I only saw two kids crying). Our volunteers sprung into action and literally people started cussing them out like they were dogs. Some lady slapped one of our volunteers across the face. I have never heard M.F. so much in my life. I kid you not, there were parents falling out on the ground crying because they couldn’t find their children. After an hour or so we got all the kids matched up. I then went out to the EMT’s that were there and they informed me that 3 people had heart attacks and 4 people had passed out!!!!!!

To make matters worse, people were furious and ready to kill us and they couldn’t leave. It took over 2 hours to clear the parking lot. So we stayed. People cussed us out about there kids getting no eggs, their kids getting hurt, their kids getting lost, etc. You COULDN’T get them to calm down.

At one time I look over to one of the police officers and he is literally frozen in shock at what is taking place. People were calling 911 and trying to file missing people reports.

After the event was over things even got crazier. People were emailing us telling us we traumatized their kids from egg hunts, people were calling the office tell me that I was stupid as (well you get the point), people were throwing stuff at our parking volunteers.

I know I am not doing this story justice but I have told it so much I am sick of it. Here are some random crazy things that happened:

  • One of the officers told us and I quote, “You guys have literally turned Riverstone Pkwy into the strip in Panama City Beach.” He said people were partying in their cars, pulling over into people’s yards and just hanging out, and women were flashing people!!!!!
  • Kids had no eggs, but parents were walking around with hundreds in scooped up in their shirts.
  • Some crazy dude was walking up and down the field screaming in some mad man voice for his kid. I thought he was about to shoot all of us!
  • I saw a kid fall and a parent pick up their eggs and take them while never helping the child
  • I was shocked at how many people in Canton carry knives!!!
  • When it was over people were literally driving through soccer fields and over curbs to get out.

Here are some things we learned:

  • People will go NUTS over plastic eggs!!!!!
  • Parents don’t listen.
  • Parents won’t allow their kids to be kids.
  • The city of Canton has some of the worse communication in the world. Mayor Hobgood I HOPE you are reading this and I HOPE you call our office. I have let the city know I would like to meet with you and have gotten no response. We communicated EXACTLY what our intentions were with everyone from the city to the DOT to the police and the day of the event they acted like they had no idea what was happening.
  • People had a blast! Honestly, for every negative comment we have gotten, we have gotten two positive comments.
  • Our volunteers are amazing. I can’t believe the beating they took. At the end of the event they were cheering and ready to do it again!
  • The city of Canton is in major need of stuff for families to do!
  • IF we do it again, we will put event fencing up around the field and not allow parents in at all.
  • Kids are awesome! I had a young boy in a wheel chair who got ONLY two eggs tell me how awesome it was! That made the entire day worth it.
  • I knew Canton was redneck, but didn’t know how redneck! I love this town!
  • I never knew kids wore the Easter outfits to egg hunts. We ruined a lot of easter clothes!
  • I would do it all over again! It was a great event for our community and I stand by how organized we were. NEVER in our wildest dreams could we imagined that many people showing up.

Our heart was to offer an awesome event for the people of our community, nothing more, nothing less.  Contrary to popular belief we WERE prepared and if we weren’t someone would have died.   I have NEVER been more proud of our people as I was  Saturday!  They were awesome and I thought the event was awesome!

If you are one of the people who had a bad experience, please accept my apology.  That wasn’t our intention.  We now know how many people an event like this will draw and we will be even MORE ready if we do something like this again!
